Yesterday I bought a few tools, including a nice Jet table saw for and the DEWALT DW735 planer, and the only remaining thing I need at this time is a bandsaw for resawing up to 7" or 8" stock on occasion. Previously I use a Grizzly (in my former neighbor's shop). Anyway, I found this older Jet locally for $350. Thoughts?

It may have a 7" capacity but .....

Sawing 7" thick material is tough on any saw with less than 2 HP. My resaw bandsaw has 3 HP and it will make it's way through 7" or 8" hardwood albeit slowly depending on the wood. This saw is older and over priced as stated. Under $300.00 and at $250.00 would be a better deal. The older Jet machines are well built in my experience. This one does have a cast iron throat which will allow for a riser block, but then you are back to the power issue. Offer $250 FIRM, and walk away if there is no deal. :|

If you already have bought it it wasn't that bad of a deal, if you haven't offer $250 as said if no deal walk away:smile2:

I have also found if you show them the cash, and tell them it is all you have they tend to get money hungry, and will bargain with you

I'm going to go look at it this evening. I think I'm first in line. He is getting rid of it because he is moving this summer and doesn't have space in the new place.

Should I try to even offer $200 (and walk if not)? Or a firm $250? What arguments do I use for the price as I'm inspecting it / talking to myself?

I cannot reasonably get a (much) larger saw, and I certainly won't spend more than $600 or so, at least not in the next few months. I'm not saying I have to resaw thick hardwood at this price point. I just won't resaw thick hardwood. To be able to resaw thinner stuff and softwood would still be very helpful!

Is this desire for a bandsaw a need purchase or a want purchase? If you have the ability to spend as much as $600 on one then I would say be patient and look around some more. In my experience, researching a purchase has always paid off in higher dividends then impulse buying. For a little more than the $600 figure you mentioned you could have a brand new one of these, http://www.grizzly.com/products/14-Deluxe-Bandsaw/G0555LX , delivered to your front door.

Quick update...and good news! I ended up picking up a JWBS-14CS with riser block and Carter Band Saw Stabilizer (both installed) yesterday...for free! It was in a shop, just largely unused for the past fifteen years. It does appear to run fine (it was tested before being disassembled), and I anticipate it requiring some setup and perhaps new tires, etc. I will also probably have to put other guides on it for wider blades. It's in my car right now, but I will soon be unloading it and setting it up.
