Does anyone know if it would be safe to have wood touching a steam/hot water radiator?

If that radiator gets hot enough to set wood on fire than you have even bigger worries than that. Your boiler is about to blow!!!.

Think about what the kindling temperature of wood (approximately 451 degrees) is. Your whole heating system would have turned to steam and blown long before that.

I wouldn't put wood directly on a radiator. When I build radiator enclosures I line the inside with 98% reflective thin insulation you can get from home supply stores. It's amazingly effective, allowing you to put wood pretty darn close to the radiator.

I have a radiator in my living room that is six foot long that has a piece of 3/4 inch oak plywood with hole drilled in it. Been sitting on it for ten years at least and let me tell you, it is the best place to lay on after snowblowing to warm up!!!!!!!
