We want to make bamboo boxes to house items that we sell. We sell about 100 items per year and I think a bamboo box would be a good fit.
The outside of the box will be about 9x9x9 inches. This size led me to consider making the box using 5 1/8" bamboo flooring. The box will consist of two nearly equal halves (top and base) that fit together by modifying the groove with a router and using the existing tung. It would only have a seam on the top (~9x9") and base where the tung and groove meet permanently. Some sanding and/or router work could make that joint nearly invisible or we could use a decal to hide it.

The flooring is pre-finished and we plan to lightly sand the finished surfaces and shoot urethane on the outside. I am looking at finger joints for the edges.

Has anyone worked with this wood in a similar manner? Will there be any surprises? Thank you.

Before you go very far with this idea I believe I would find out what kind of finish is on the flooring. Urethane won't adhere to everything, so you need to make sure what ever finish you use stays on.

It would be interesting to see a sketch of the box. Usually it's easier to build a box like a cube and after it dries cut it for the lid. This way all the parts are in alignment.
