Well... My 1 man part time cabinet shop took a big hit this week...

With all my 2021 projects, I saved money and purchased a new PM209HH Planer at the end of the year. I found one in stock about 2 hours from the house. Went. Purchased it. Scheduled pickup for this week. Went down there, loaded it up, strapped it good (or so I thought) and began my way home.

I got within a mile of my house and look in the rearview mirror just in time to watch my chunk of gold (not only in color, but price) slide off the side of the pallet and begin tumbling. My heart instantly sank... And a few 4 letter words spewed out. Not sure if the staps slipped off the truck hooks or pallet broke or what, but whatever happened, also totaled my brand new planer.... After going home and getting the bobcat, loading this hunk of junk back on the trailer, and getting out of my neighbors front yard, I just quit for the day... Emotional sick. And of course, auto insurance/homeowners insurance doesnt cover my $6300 purchase.

With all that said. Let my misery serve as a reminder. If you think you have it strapped good, strap it 2 more times. And stop and check it along the way....

Busted the cast iron. Bent the frame. Severed the top rolling bar, bent up all the metal, and busted the belt cover, electrical cover, and switch box. Per Redmonds, a total loss... So anyone looking for 5 HP PM motor or 20" Helical Head? They are about the only things salvageable worth any money.

But today is a new day. So chin up!

I've seen it happen a few times. While at Blystone cabinets in Buckner, Mo. Jason bought a new 6x132 edge sander. We had an old forklift with Tourettes syndrome, when he thought he had it off the flatbed truck it jerk and ended up on the motor...a lot of beatings and it kinda worked, but nothing to brag about..

I would try to separate the "bent from the broken" parts and see what's left. Even broken cast iron can be brazed welded back together by an expert welder, heck, I've even done it! Bent cabinets can be straightened by a decent body shop, or body man who know how to straighten metal, It can also be sawed away and replaced. It can also be replaced.
I came very close to losing a tall 5 HP air compressor on a 25 mile drive from the store. One strap was cut through on a sharp edge leaving only one holding. I was 1 1/2 miles from home when i stopped to check things out. Close call for sure.
I am very surprised to there's hear no insurance coverage.
I rented a 4 wheel car carrier from a rental place. 2 miles from the store the triangle hitch broke right off the frame. I picked it up and put it in the back on my Suburban. I got to the store and threw it on the floor sayin "The rest of your trailer is down the road on the other side crashed into a snow bank. Come to find out it was stolen at one time, also broken off and an amatuer welded back together. Insurance covered the damage to my truck. O know different sitaution, but I wouldn't stop asking until I reached the highest insurance official I could find.
What if that thing had fallen into another vehicle or building or person?

I dumped a table saw off the back of a pickup many years ago. Got lucky, the thing landed fairly flat on the pavement only wiping out the fence.

So apparently auto only covers the liability of the item hit something or caused damage, but unless you have a separate cargo insurance policy the contents are not covered under Physical Damage. However a trailer would be because when being towed it is part of your insurance!

but yes! Trying to salvage will be my best option, I agree!

My first thought was “at least I have insurance I guess” but turns out it doesn’t cover cargo. For a $10,000 limit on cargo would be $300 a year. I just don’t see that being feasible (before this happened).

Not sure how all of that works. I’ve been a hobbyist for 15 year and this was my first year as an actual LLC where I will pay taxes for my work. I started working for a contractor that requires a 10-99 so I just went for it.

so I am sure there are a lot of things I should be deducting that I am not.

You might want to look into it. I work for cabinet shop and ran a part time cabinet shop. Truck, tools and percentage of space all wrote off. I did this from 2000-2018until I went on diasbility in 2018. Why I never really had a hobby shop till now.. Has a business account at at bank...

They might like the idea of using your machine as an example of how durable PM machines are!

Get them to do a feature story on you, how fast the Planer was going, and a subtle reminder to Customers to learn from the experience.

Your pride will recover faster than your pocket book will, give it a shot!

Ouch.. I lost a williams and hussey once, and that was a completely sickening feeling, but fortunately cheap item. 😔

The machine (while scarred) looks like the important parts are intact. I'd expect it would be functional with a minimum of effort.

There are some relevant issues.
1. Who strapped the unit to the pallet, the dealer or was it from Powermatic's freight shipper? There may be liability issues here.
2. Was the pallet strapped down to the trailer, and by you or others?
3. Whose straps were used? Your's? Were they new, old, frayed? Strap company may be liable?
4. What type of bindings were used on the pallet? steel non-adjustable bands or nylon webs?
5. What were the secondary straps anchored to? Hooks in the floor? Wrapped around the trailer frame? Did any hooks fail?
6. Did the secondary straps slide on the trailer frame and get loose?
7. Did the straps themselves fail or get cut?
8. Was the pallet cleated with blocks to the bed of the trailer as it should have been to prevent it from sliding?

If enough "violations" of Murphy's Law were in play, the result will be what happened.
Years of experience moving heavy equipment has made me very cautious these days.
For example, I have 200 lbs of steel beam at the rear of my unloaded pick up box in the winter. That's because weight transfers to the from wheels under braking and lifts the rear wheel off slightly, so they lose traction. All the weight of the engine is on the front wheels, very little on the rear is on the rear. Slick roads in the winter make the situation worse.
I also avoid left turns immediately after a traffic light! Why? Because drivers are looking at the light, not your taillights when you are stopped for the turn, they only see "green". I got rear ended by a teen in an unloaded pickup doing this many years ago. He couldn't stop in time for both reasons. 1969 Olds Vista Cruiser, beautiful car!
My buddy's son works in auto insurance. He says the most lawsuits in that industry are from customers suing their own insurance companies.

I don't think anyone else has a liability here. If there is an issue of liability, then discussing this issue on a public forum is not a wise idea.

I am assuming you came to commiserate. I feel you! It is a sickening feeling as you see something sliding off your truck or trailer. It's never happened to me with something this heavy, but it has happened to me, and I understand it a little.

Once you brush yourself off, there is good advice on breaking down some parts and trying a to repair it. Powermatic certainly wants you to be happy with their products, and I expect they will do their best to make sure you get the best value out of your purchase whatever that means.
