This is a workbench I am looking at building. The body will be built out of 3/4 plywood and the top will be double layered. The legs will be milled 2x4s and 4x4s. I am looking for any input, thoughts, opinions, and ideas. Thanks and looking forward to picking yall's brains and having a good discussion.

I think it would make it easier if you would put the 1x4 cross pieces on the outside of the legs. You might then put a piece of plywood on top of the cross pieces for tool storage.
What kind of joinery does it call for on the legs? You might consider tusk tenons so you can keep them from getting loose. I just made a bench for my son. It has to be portable.

I would put a plywood shelf on the botttom framing and a plywood backboard behind it. This would keep the whole bench from racking side to side.
My combination workbench, assembly table, outfeed area is primarily of 2x6 & 2x4 construction and is rock solid with no movement what-so-ever. The height is just below the top of my table saw (and a future upgraded tale saw) and the overall size is 4' x 8' with a 30" x 30" drop-down area that I use interchangeably with my oscillating spindle/belt sander, portable router table and scroll saw.

The top consists of two layers of 3/4" plywood that was screwed (not glued) together with a sheet of hardboard attached to the top via double-sided tape (for easy replacement once worn or damaged) and surrounded by modified oak trim. The base is also recessed from the top to allow the use of clamps along the edges.

I installed shelving on one side to hold an assortment of portable power tools and the sander can fit beneath the top on the left side when not in use. The far side has storage for the router table and scroll saw, along with a variety of woodworking supplies which will eventually be housed in a series of drawers once I get them built. The amount of convenient storage the unit provides has been a huge plus to the work area.

Power is supplied via a 1/2" steel conduit recessed into the anti-fatigue mat on the floor with an outlet near the table saw and a second with a power strip at the drop-down area. I presently use the shop vac / dust deputy combo for dust collection at the drop down area and for the tabletop, though I may plumb a collection pipe from the main dust collection system at some point.

I had a basic plan when I began construction, though some of the details evolved a bit during the building process. I used simple joinery with everything screwed together to allow for any eventual changes, and I have been quite satisfied with how it turned out.

Hi Jeeves,

I'll follow along as I design, build and facilitate more tradtional style benches...:vs_wave:

Since you're down there in "Creole Country" (I do miss the Bayous..!!!...:vs_sad:) I thought you might enjoy watching a version of a Roubo Work Bench being made...with an Asian twist!!

A young friend and colleague of mine just built it. He uses the same means, methods and materials (aka green wood) for most of his projects like I do...

Enjoy:

There is nothing worse than a bench that wobbles. Chris Curl has shown one way to overcome racking. Think about how you intend to overcome racking, and you are on your way to making a bench instead of just a table. Bolts work to an extent, but wedges work better...they are infinitely adjustable over time.
