Wooden wakesurf board

Hi, I’m making a wooden wakesurf board and I plan on painting designs on the bottoms of it. I would also like to stain it. Is it possible to do both and if so do I stain before or after the paint. I will be putting resin over everything at the end. The board will look something like the picture attached. Thanks

Welcome to the forum, Mc. what part of the world are you in ?
Personally, I'm not fond of "stained paint". I like nice, clean & crisp graphics.
I would avoid stain because it could prevent the resin from adhering. Instead, use wood that’s the color you want.

If it were me, I would seal with a few coats of epoxy and sand smooth. Then paint the design getting the nice, crisp lines John mentioned.

I’d then do more coats epoxy.

I’m not sure if you mean epoxy when you say resin. Polyester resin doesn’t hold up as well as epoxy in this application.

Are you planning to use fiberglass cloth?

This is what I also would do. It's very possible to bury vinyl graphics under the epoxy. I've done it a couple times and it has worked well. Apply the graphics before the epoxy has reached full cure for the best bond. In fact (I'd check the mfg's specs) but many epoxies will give you about 24 hours to layer on more epoxy and still get a chemical bond between the two layers. Sanding is perfectly OK before the next layer is applied. You would get a mechanical and chemical bond that way.
That is a pretty cool project. Can't wait to see it completed!

Clever idea about using vinyl graphics under the epoxy!
