Hello everyone! I have a TV console from urban home that is only described as "reclaimed wood." Anyone have any thoughts on what this is? Wood type and treatment?

I can't seem to open the additional pictures with my computer. The one you posted looks like ash.

If you are happy with the appearance I would just oil it with lemon oil. The wood looks really dry.

Although ash and oak look alike, the main difference is that ash has a closed grain and oak has an open grain. Judging from the way I see the picture, I would say you have some oak. Both Steve and I see the same grain pattern... so is the grain open (deep pores) or is it closed (smooth surface)?

It is hard to tell without looking at the project in person. I lean toward oak. Look at the 2 links I give of ash wood and oak wood and see if you can use the pictures to find more clues. The wood in your pictures looks really weathered. I think that was done with a flap wheel or with 3-M scotch bright pads on a spindle. That method will knock down the open dark grain and round the edges. Here is a link to the 3-M pads...

We have an introduction section where you can say a few words about yourself. If you fill out your profile in your "User Control Panel", you can list any hobbies, experience or other facts. You can also list your general geographical location which would be a help in answering some questions.

Looks to me like Red Oak that was wiped with a 50/50 BLO/mineral spirits mix. When dry, topcoated with either a lacquer, or a WB polyurethane.

Thanks everyone! There aren't visible pores. So I guess that would support oak.
