Someone wants me to build a bookshelf and wants it stained with a cherry stain. I could use cherry to build the bookshelf but was wondering if there is another wood that could be used and also take the stain well. Thanks in advance.

Alder, birch, poplar, soft maple to name a few.

Thanks for the response it was helpful. I just want to make sure tha I select a wood that will take the stain nicely and not look bad when I finish.
