I'm planning to build a coffee table out of sapele. The top will be a few edge-glued 4/4 boards. Hadn't planned on biscuits or splines - counting on cauls for alignment.

My design's based on one from a Taunton book which recommends attaching the top with L-shaped buttons screwed to the bottom of the tabletop with one edge inserted into a groove in the top rail or apron. Hope that's clear. The idea is to allow the top to move.

For my project, I'd hoped to hinge the lid (on one long side). Will this be a problem if I get movement? I'd been planning on using one long piano-style hinge. Would that be better or worse than using two or three small standard hinges?
