I am thinking its due to moisture but not sure. I bought a length of maple (import) from a local disount store. it seemed to be sitting around at that store for some time now so i thought it would be fine. Well i started cutting it for a pair of stools. got my mortises cut in and while i was tring a dry fit the legs and cross bar but quickly noticed the cross bar starting to split so i pulled it out just to fine the other end of the legs had split as well. Why would this be happening? i did tap the two items togather with my mallet but it was not that tight. any thoughts? wood the now sits in my dirt basment with a torpeto heat that kicks on a few time an hour while i'm down there.
