They supposedly sell this on Amazon although I can't find it, but it doesn't look like it would hold together very long.

There is no way to be certain without taking it apart. However, hopefully, they used dowels and some good glue. It looks like solid wood rather than veneered mdf or similer. That means that the doweled joints (if they are) will be pretty strong.

I forgot about dowels, I couldn't see any screw holes and assumed it was just glued together. I've done stuff like this in my young years and they never held
There are a number of different ways that could be put together which would hold up well. Unless someone sits on it I think it would be good.

Really, I almost want to make one just to see. :) I can see the top holding because it has 2 pieces one on each side and the weight would be mostly on the arm of the chair, but I don't know about the book shelf. I wonder what glue would hold without the dowels

I don't see any structural issues with it. The weight of a few magazines or books isn't enough to cause a joint failure.
As long as the joints are glued and pinned or doweled it should be fine.

Since I already own both Festool domino machines, the 500 and the 700, I would use one of them.

There is a T, but for the other 3 joints dovetails would work. Maybe wedged tenons for the T?

I'm not interested in making one for myself because it will not fit any of my furniture. I just saw it advertised and wonder how it would hold up.

I made something similar and much smaller to hold my tablet on my head board so I could plug in earbuds to listen to music while I slept. Nobody else in the house wanted to listen to my music and I didn't have Bluetooth at the time. I was also just out of the hospital at the time and didn't have the strength to make something better engineered so I just glued a couple of pieces of wood together. It broke within a week and I ended up hanging the tablet in a sock on the bed post for a while until my daughter bought me Bluetooth earbuds.

My son made a simple version of this with mitered corners and used splines to reinforce the joints. I made a similar one from 1¼" plywood and pocket screws.
