I know little about carpentry, but I would like to know the easiest way to determine the cut for the angle on the red pieces you see here. I am considering making a tent deck with roof, and I see this on many structures, as a support. Also, what is it called, and what tool to determine angle? I know there is a small aluminum triangle contractors carry, but not sure if that is useful, or how to use it.

Thank you.

The small aluminum square is called a speed square, it is 8" x 8" with a 45* angle.

Just use a protractor for the angle. Or you can transfer the angle with a sliding bevel.

thank you

Thank you. I am just concerned about the length. I mean, a 45 degree angle is fine, but how does one determine the second cut, for the height of the angle brace? Thank you kindly.

A^2 + B^2 =C^2, or

C^2 = √A^2 + B^2
