I stumbled upon this project. I think I understand what it is, but I was wondering if anyone could explain it further, and possibly know of where I could find plans?
I've seem something like this before and I think that drops down to form a bowl. That's something of a guess so I hope someone else will display some brilliance and ID it absolutely for you.
Ditto on what Shop Dad said.
The cuts should be on a slight angle so when you pick it up it drops like a slinky to make a bowl. Pretty neat.

Definitely a fruit bowl... I don't think I've ever seen plans for one but watched someone demonstrate it once. It's basically just a scroll saw cut in a spiral pattern... I don't remember how the outer ring integrity is maintained, though.
If I were to try that I'd laminate some thin re-sawn & planed flats of wood together first so I had cross grain in places. to porevent the wood from breaking at the weak points.
