This is a handle from a disston back saw that I'm working on. Any idea what type of wood? This picture is after sanding it down a bit.

I think it is apple. I believe apple was used on all early Disston saws, but many switched over to beech at some point in time. You could do some reading on the Disstonian Institute site and figure out for sure.

From the Disstonian Institute site I think it may be beech. But, I would like to be able to confirm by inspecting the actual handle.

Beech,Birch,Maple......

We always tried to get our hands on(ha)some Black Gum.One of the hardest to "spilt" woods know to man.You can get real thin in the handle areas.
