I am working on a side table incorporating hard maple and walnut. I don't really like the lightness of maple, but do not want to have to try to stain only the maple and not the walnut. Is there anything that may be recommended for darkening up the maple a little bit. I am looking for something that will look good on both woods. Any wisdom will be great.

tinted shellac might work, useing it as a toner. You would need dewaxed shellac if you plan on putting a finish over it. They say if you use shellac make sure it is fresh and the only way to get fresh shellac is to buy the flakes and make it yourself. I use the trans tint from wood craft.
