Look into using Unibond 800. Two part veneer glue that is very forgiving and has a long work time. Can clamp press or vacuum press with it. But more importantly, you can add uniblocker to prevent bleed through. It's pricey for glue, but worth it if using nice veneers. It comes in three colors...light to dark. As for coating veneer before use...omg no, I can only imagine the piece puckering up and breaking when pressed. Just give it a shot, you'll swear by it.
