What are some good turning tools for purpleheartwood, good turning speeds recommended, and general tips for purpleheart? I am already aware of the burning effect from staying in one place too long.I have a 12X42 inch and have on order Excelsior 5-speed mini Lathe ordered from Rockler week ago,,
thanks for listening and I am sort of a novice being retired and 68 years young Irby Vaughn, Olympia, WA

The appropriate tool depends more on the type of turning (spindle? bowl? end-grain hollowing?) than the type of wood.

That said, all the purpleheart I've turned has been very hard. It might be worth starting with an easier wood to turn (meaning a softer wood) as a practice.

+1 to what duncsuss said. Start on some softer wood for practice. That done, just make sure your tools are very sharp and it cuts really nice.
