I have been considering taking out my front center seat and build a console in it's place.
I have a 01 F250.
I don't use the center seat as a seat. I use the flip down console and very rarely flip up the console. Mainly to vacuum.

Has anyone built a center console for a truck?

Thanks.

PS: It will also house HAM Radio equipment.

I built a center console for our 2002 Suburban. It houses a video screen, dvd player, A/V selector, and assorted electronics. It also has a large removable storage compartment.

I used cardboard to build a template because of the complex curvature of the floor. The console was built out of 1/2 MDF glued and screwed together. All edges and corners were rounded over to "soften" them. Then I put thin closed-cell foam over the whole thing and covered it with heat-shrink vinyl to pull everything tight.

I will try to dig up pictures of it if I can find them.

Custom Center Console

TexasSawduster: yes, this is done all the time.
after you get the center seat removed, then start making
mockups out of cardboard. the hot-melt glue gun makes
quick work for temporary joints and attachments.
I know 95% of fabricators use MDF for speaker boxes etc.
but, for a console that will see a lot of use, I personally would use plywood.
[putting screws into MDF can be very frustrating when they break out].
make a cardboard box the size of your Ham/CB equipment also to get a good fit.
take into consideration of keeping your drink holders below the electronics
to prevent spill damage. good examples can be found on the WWW if you google:
"Custom Truck Console images".
best of luck in your project !

I made one for my 2010, F-150. I did not remove the center seat, or dog's seat. As the center seat wasn't adjustable (forward/backward), I sort of wedged the console between the dash and seat. The resiliency of the seat applied enough pressure to keep it in place. The front and back of the console were contoured to fit the transmission hump.

I don't think that there are pictures available as my son has sold the truck and I'm driving a '15 aluminum F-150. When I ordered this one, a console was required in a Lariat. I will try to see if I can find some old pictures.

BTW - I used ¼ inch oak finished with Shellac. There was a place for the cell phone and two other compartments for a square Kleenex box and a similar size oak trash bucket. I did get a lot of compliments from valet parking guys about it.

I try to keep myself aware of posting dates and totally
missed this one as being six years old !!

the O/P has probably given up on the project and sold his truck by now.

now I am wondering: how did it float to the top now without any
responses to it in 6 years ? just a fluke - or - did it have an unsavory
reply (spam) that made it float up and it got deleted ?
odd - just plain odd.

:wink:It's not a big deal and we now know who has made some of the consoles, and it's some fine work. I supposed if there was some critical question that needed an answer, you'd be correct in your analysis, but who cares after 6 years anyway!
