I recently watched a video on youtube of a guy making an ax handle and decided I want to take up this hobby. What basic tools do I need to get started with this type of woodworking? I really know nothing about it at all!
Welcome. You really want to fight with really tough wood and make axe handles?
Research the handle patterns = Magard Log Home Building Tools.
Research the wood. The size(s) and quality that you need.
That has to be rough shaped = drawknife.
Rounded and smoothed = spokeshaves.
Get to be any good at that and you could wind up making replacement spokes for buggy wheel restorations. Then it gets interesting.
Have a handle break and the head rebounds and bashes the user will shorten your career.
