I have a Jet 1642 and it comes with a 14" tool rest. I would like to find a tool rest that is not as wide.
I'm finding that there is not that large a selection that have a 1 inch post.

My question is, what do you people think of the adapter that Penn State sells that reduces it from a 1 inch to accomodate a 5/8 inch post?

Thank you
Dick

I have 2 robust took rests for the same lathe as yours. They are worth it. Got mine through Craft Supply .

For another 0.02---
Woodcraft usually has a modest selection of tool rests in the store--that's where I got a 6in to use on my Nova and other lathes--1 inch post.
And they carry the Robust rests too.
Can't speak for Rockler--I'd have to go 2.5 hrs the other direction in addition to the 2 hrs I'd spend going to Woodcraft. I'm kinda halfway between both.

I have that interchangeable system from Woodcraft and love it. The nice thing is if you change lathes you just buy new posts.

There's a reason bigger lathes have thicker tool rest posts.

I haven't herd of many people breaking quality rests of either size but a 16" bowl connected to a 1 1/2 or 2 HP motor creates a lot more shock and pressure than a 10" bowl on a midi lathe with maybe a 1/2 HP motor.

I would be careful using smaller rests on full size lathes.
