Hi all!

I'm making windows and am looking for a tool that will join my 75mm x 58mm stock for the opening light.

Clearly the stock will be rabeted to take the glass so how's the best way to do that? The frame is out of unpainted oak so no chance to hide bodges under paint!

I've tried my standard cabinet making twinset but won't do a good job with 58mm thickness.

Suggestions welcomed!

Not sure what the problem is...

But there are many router/shaper cutters that will make the joint you need.

Making windows is not a trivial undertaking. After I built these, I had a better appreciation for 'store bought' windows! The first thing for me was to select the muntin bit set. I bought the minature set grom MLCS, but you would require a standard set. Some of the bit makers have free on-line, downloadable instructions on using their bits. I read as many as I could find before I jumped in...

Being from the UK, garyrxl, your terminology is different than what is typically used in the US. The overall frame that holds the glass is called a sash. The dividers in the sash for individual panes of glass are called muntins. There are many ways to make these from ordinary hand tools to specialized cutters for routers or shapers. When you say twinsets, you are likely referring to these type of cutters. There are similar cutters for building cabinet doors which we call stile and rail sets or cope and bead sets. These are not quite the same as window muntin or sash cutters. Some of the cope and bead sets can be altered for glass but these are primarily for cabinet doors with a glass panel, not exterior house windows. For exterior window sash, you need a more substantial mortice and tenon. The "twinsets" only make a stub tenon.

Thanks so much and yes you are right different terminology but some of mine probably just plain wrong wherever I am!

So if I say that the sash is the bit the glass sits in we are talking about the sane thing.

There are no glaze bars / muntins. The sash is just the 4 pieces around the glass with no dividers.

In uk most of the off the shelf windows are made with a bigger version of rail and stile type bits I think.

For the project I'm on there is an oak subframe I made which now need the sashes made. For each subframe there are 6 separate sashes. Out of which only 1 is an opening sash. The other 5 are fixed in place.

As I've got to make 60 of these sashes I'm looking for a quick way of making the 50 fixed sashes. So is there a rail and stile type set that will do that?

I recognise the openers may need mortise and tenon but not the fixed ones.

If you know of such a thing that will cope with 58mm thick stock I'd be grateful for a link!

I have been satisfied with THIS [/url[ bit set. The thickness of the wood is accounted for by the way the bits are set in the router.

MCLS bits are good, however not the top of the line. Whether or not they would do 50 sets I cannot say. I assume that these are single glazed windows and not energy efficient.

For something that thick, you will need to look at shaper cutters for doors, or two different router bits for each profile. Any single router bit to make the whole profile will be a custom made one.

It doesn't apply to your case, but if you go to my website, and then to the windows page, I have a recent sash job that we did outlined in details of the different steps.

You may need to change the cutter width to accept your glass dimension? I have these bits and have reconfigured them for different applications.
