I am finishing a cherry end table and cant decide whether to use blo or just shellac. i have tested it and don't, see much of a difference as far as color or grain pop. should the blo make it darker. I plan on a final coat of water based poly.

Linseed oil will just bring out the grain. It normally enhances the grain more than just shellac. I would recommend using both. First use the linseed oil and when dry use a de-waxed shellac such as Sealcoat and then topcoat with the water based polyurethane.

I would use BLO mixed 50/50 with VM&P naptha. Wipe on...leave for a few minutes, and wipe off. When cured, I would spray thin applications of waterbase polyurethane. No shellac.
