Tail vise build-update

In January, I posted about my desire to add a tail vise to my existing workbench. The work on this modification has been slowed by cold, colds, other projects and lack of 8/4 maple in my area.

The basic construction phase of my tail vise is almost complete and already I am in love with the functionality of the tail vise. I thought I’d post a couple of pictures of the project.

I want to thank @John Smith_inFL for the inspiration to begin this project and @swp, @BigCountry79 and @DrRobert for their insight and help.

If anyone wants to add a tail vise to their existing table or incorporate one in a new build, please feel free to contact me.

Looks great!

I have to say I have no clue how i would take on that project with an existing bench. That must have been challenging.
Nice and I’m sure it’s a huge addition. No dog holes?

What hardware did you use? I’ve been wanting to rework mine using quick release hardware.

The white oak strip (second board in) has a series of rectangular dog holes. 3 in the "box" and 6 in the strip leading down to the face vise.

I used a screw that was gifted to me, it is about 20 inches long, 1 1/8 inch diameter and 3 threads per inch. I am pretty sure it came from amazon. A quick release might be a little better but the 3 TPI moves it pretty quickly.

So far, I have found it to be the best! It gives the ability to securely hold boards flat or on edge on the bench or in the jaws and I can hold very small pieces in the little "L" section by the handle.

Just a couple of pictures of the finished workbench. I have to say that I absolutely love the tail vise. There are a couple of design elements that in retrospect I wish I had done a little differently but they aren't a big deal.

It turned out very nice! That was a tricky project...

I did laugh when I saw that shoe rack under the bench. We have a few of those kicking around here.

I keep trying to throw that thing away, but as it turns out it is perfect for storing bench hooks.

Yeah...ours has been rescued from the trash by almost everyone in the house. I swear I threw it out in the move then my wife had it in our closet and it's gone through two of our kids' rooms...
