I turn sweet gum all the time and it is one of my favorites. I haven't found it brittle at all it cuts great and takes a good finish.

if you go through a log you will find some very cool patterns along with sections that are almost white.

I agree with ghost. I picked up quite a bit of Sweet Gum logs off of Craigslist and I think it turns wonderfully. I also haven't had much issues with warping or cracking but maybe that's due to the high humidity here in Houston.

got my load

I picked up my load of "sweet gum" yesterday, and a good size load it was. Just about filled my pickup.
All sizes from 8" to 2' long and 3" to 18" in diameter.

If any of you lived in the Daytona Beach area, I'd love to share my load. (no charge)

I was very surprised to see that some of the wood was starting to crack by the time that I got home. From a standing tree to about 4 hours later. Wow.
