I have a new island in the kitchen and will be making 5 stools to fit it. From floor to bottom on the island is 34". I'm going to carve up some walnut "tractor seat" type seats and 4 legs. For comfortable seating at the island, how tall should they be?

Seating height for kitchen counter height (36") should be 24".

Just for info purposes, seating height for dining height (29"-30") should be 18".

Seating height for stand-up bar height of 42", should be 30".

These heights are architectural standards, variance would be on a case by case basis.

If your knees go under the countertop, traditionally, 8" of clearance is allowed from the bottom of the top, including aprons if any, to the seat. If your top is roughly 2" thick, no apron, 34" - 2" = 32" - 8" = 24" stool height.
