I have a new island in the kitchen and will be making 5 stools to fit it. From floor to bottom on the island is 34". I'm going to carve up some walnut "tractor seat" type seats and 4 legs. For comfortable seating at the island, how tall should they be?

36" to the top of the counter.

The stools are 24 from the floor to the top of the seat. The top of the foot rest is 6 inches off the floor.

If your knees go under the countertop, traditionally, 8" of clearance is allowed from the bottom of the top, including aprons if any, to the seat. If your top is roughly 2" thick, no apron, 34" - 2" = 32" - 8" = 24" stool height.

Make the seat height 12" less than the top of the counter. As other replies have inferred, dining chairs are 18" when the table is 30" high. Bar stools are 24" when the bar top is 36" high.
