I use both depending on the job at hand.
The non-woven pads do work very well, and can be washed and reused. Also, with non-woven, ya don't have to worry about oil from the steel wool.

I have seen the non-woven pads at Lowe's. Betcha that paint stores have 'em too.

I use the synthetic exclusively. Never had any issues.

I prefer synthetic pads, like ScotchBrite. Here is a grit equivalent chart. I would use stainless steel wool in lieu of steel wool.There are other "wools" like bronze, and mineral based wools. Regular steel wool is sharp and shreds.
