Thinking about cleaning this up a bit and seeing if it will work well for me.

I've watched youtube videos on other scraper planes like the 112's but not on the 12. How would I use this? Any differences to the set up? And, most importantly, would it help me with maple?

Should I just try to score a 112 and sell this one?

If you've watched videos using the #112 your set as far as putting an edge on the blade and adjusting the blade angle. On the #12 I find it more comfortable to grab the handle and lay my index fingers on top of the side rails. A #12 will work just fine with maple or most any hardwoods. Don't even bother on pine or similar woods.

I have both #12 and #112 and use whichever is handy at the time with a fresh blade.

It does make a difference if you have a proper width blade (2-7/8"). Many are found with replacement blades that are more narrow.
