These machines must have a manual home button for Z at least ..right?
Yes, I home the machine for all axes each time I turn it on but in this case I don't have a bottom Z sensor. It wouldn't have mattered anyway because I still had 1/2" to the actual bottom of Z so no sensor would have tripped.

David - is this something that you can still use ?
I'm not familiar with your router or collet or the bit that broke.
was just wondering if it is a total loss.

Nope, snapped into two clean pieces. About the only purpose it serves now is that I set it by my mouse pad so I'll see it each time I use the CNC - a $40 reminder not to let this happen again. :(

I got lucky when I destroyed my personal indicator. After the fact, my immediate supervisor ordered me a new one on the companies dime. Told me to keep it quiet, as he wouldn't do that for everyone on the floor.
