I had this piece lying around and figure i would give a go at a box. not too happy with the shape, but hope mom likes it. its 3" round and 8" high
finished so far with 2 coats of boiled linseed oil

I like the colors too.What kind of wood is it?

she liked it, but the next one will not be of this style you live and learn. the wood is real colorful. it is a box elder, i think the name is fire striped box elder, never heard of it until i bought it on ebay, which was really cheap for the two pieces. i am going to turn a pepper mill out of the other piece! It is more pink than red!

Pretty cool BD,
Box elder is a member of the maple family. Not sure what causes the red streaks, but they sure are neat. Got a number of pieces of it sitting in the shop.

it turned pretty well. I am almost positive its an insect that creates that, just like the ambrosia beetle creates the lines in maples because there were the small holes where the red lines were. that would be my only guess! i think that wood would make a nice pepper mill!
