Didn't know what to call this. I got some silver maple from a neighbor who was having a tree removed. It's been spalting away behind the garage for about a year. It's about 5x5 with a small pedestal type base.
It had some nice figure inside. Needs a bit more sanding yet.
Here's the calabash vessel with Danish oil. The lines are not tool marks. It is the figure in the wood. Believe me, I tried sanding them out for about 30 minutes.
Whatever the name of the shape of the bowl is supposed to be, it looks very pretty to me, the form, the spalting and the grain, even the compression marks. I think many of us would like a bowl blank like this one.
Another beautifully formed bowl. It's good that you stopped trying to sand out that cool figure, I probably made you paranoid after calling out tool marks on your last bowl. Truly another fantastic piece!
That is gorgeous! Every time I see the awesome stuff you guys turn it makes me wish I had more time to learn to turn. I was given a HF lathe about 9 months ago and have had too much going on to even think about it.
