My grinder flat out sucks and I would like to use my belt sander from now on. I have a craftsman 4x36 bench top sander.

What belts are recommended for this and what grit? I've herd 120 is good but really haven't tried. Is it best to order belts to get better quality? I know HD and Rockler didn't have metal sanding belts.
I will be sharpening HSS chisels only.
Thanks!

If you have a Harbor Freight nearby, you might give their blue, zirconia belts a try, 2 for $7.99. I've used used the 80 grit and they seem to hold up pretty well on my little 4X36 imported sander. I sand wood, metal, acrylic, you name it.
I didn't think about going there but now I will. I used a 120 grit wood belt and it lasted long enough to sharpen my spindle roughing gouge.

I agree that 120 cuts fast and would be good for reshaping tools. What would a good grit be to keep the edge. Maybe 220? For touching up chisels. I'm not looking for perfect, surgically sharp edges. Just a good sharp safe tool to use.
