I have a 15-light mahogany front door that I would like to seal in order to protect it from the rain and snow. There is no storm door for protection. A few years ago I used Penefin Red on it, but it needs something before winter. Any suggestions? I'm an HVAC installer . . . Not a pro wood Craftsman like you guys. But I can handle a brush pretty well.

You are going to have to strip the door first. The Penofin finish has a lot of wax in it. It may have seem to have all faded away but there is enough wax left to hinder the adhesion of the new finish. You could use a marine grade spar varnish or marine grade polyurethane. The spar would probably be easier to find and the best is Epifanes. It's available at places that sell boat supplies.

do you want a clear wood finish or painted finish ??
I am a big fan of Pettit and Epifanes marine spar varnish.
HOWEVER !!! - most consumer grade clear finishes are a maintenance product
not just one or two coats and it will last for 5-10 years.
like the beautiful wooden boats, they are always being sanded, varnished
and maintained.
unless you have the time and patience to properly maintain a finish, you really need
to drop by a few paint stores in your area and talk with the technicians about
what will suit your project the best - with long term protection.
you will be looking for high levels of UV BLOCKERS and INHIBITORS .
some great products are available in the UK but not here.

so knowing your location would be most helpful.
