I have a beautiful small piece of sassafras off cut from a mill. I want to make a long narrow cheese and cracker tray for a gift but read that sassafras oil is weakly carcinogenic. So a penetrating oil is out. I need a hard finish that’s food safe. Thinking of shellac, Tried and True, or Waterlox. Would one of these make it safe? Other recommendations? Or should I just forget about the serving tray idea and use the wood to carve a gnome or whatever?
