Use a router...attach the router to a piece of scrap measure half the distance of ur total of the top u want from the router bit an screw the scrap to ur top. Round an round u go. If u don't have a router use a jig saw.masterwannabe said:

Hi all,
sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm a newbie to this forum.
I'm thinking of making a table with a round pedestal and base with the base 16 to 22 in. in dia.
My problem is that I don't know how to get a piece of wood that large to end up round w/o using a lathe since all the lathes I've ever seen will only accommodate of a piece of wood that's 8" or so in dia.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry about the last post... I think what u want is the pedestal itself. Hmmm I would copper the pedestal then u could sand or plane round with a templet as a guide to make sure ur round.
If you are trying to make a round disc to be a base for a pedestal (meaning a column that supports the table top), you've got a number of options.
3fingers already gave you one -- a jig that lets you move a router in a circle around the center point. These are available to buy or you can make your own very simply.
Do you have a band saw? If so, you can make a "circle cutting table" that clamps onto the table. All it really needs is a flat surface with a dowel peg 8" to the side of the band saw blade ... drill a hole in the piece you want to make circular, set the hole on the peg, away you go. A hole in the center of the circle shouldn't be an issue since you have to attach the pedestal column to the base somehow.
Or you can simply draw a circle on the board and cut it with a jig saw, saber saw, or even a hand saw, then sand it to the line.
