Repair of cutting board crack

384 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  kiwi_outdoors
my vintage genuine end grain butcher block cutting board has a crack running a ways along a glue line.

My plan is to saw cut the crack open (with the cutting board on edge on my table saw)
then
let the C.B. dry out some more,
then
fill the crack with epoxy

Whaddaya think?

How far does the crack go through the board? If very far you might just be able to break it in two. Gluing it may be a real issue if it has been soaked in mineral oil. You may have to wash it off with a grease remover such as Purple Power. Still I think even if you think you have it clean I would use dowels gluing it back together again. I would use wood glue rather than epoxy.

The crack is about 2.5" long out of a toal board dimension of 11.25"

I will not be breakling the board.

If any oil soaked into the wood inhibits bond between wood and epoxy, thats just too bad.

I would just cut the board along the entire crack line with my table saw, more or less just slicing it into two pieces. Then I would just glue it back together.

Making a partial cut and filling the kerf, leaves an obvious repair.
Cutting the entire length and regluing, would restore your board leaving no visible repair.
Either choice is "functional".
The latter choice, is functional and pleasing to the eye.

I will cut it I to the 2 pieces before our 3-4 week holiday so that the mating faces dry fully before being glues
