Hi guys, first post. Have been enjoying reading along the way.

building a dining room table with some reclaimed pine beams from an old warehouse on the gulf coast. The wood is gorgeous and I want to finish it with something that is flat - not looking for alot of gloss - want the wood to show and not look like a bar top.

I was thinking Poly but someone told me i could get watermarks. Lacquer?

Welcome to the club.

Whoever told you poly is prone to watermarks has it backwards. Lacquer is much more likely to show watermarks than polyurethane. Polyurethane is almost waterproof. The oil based poly is more water resistant than the water base but has a tendency of turning yellow as it ages and may not be a good choice if you are not staining the table. It's really best for medium to dark colors. As far as the sheen, a satin or dead flat is available in most any finish or flattening agents can be purchased to modify it yourself. The flatter sheen you use will make the finish less water resistant than the glossy finish because the flattening agents make the surface more porous.

Poly would be fine, but so would lacquer. Never had any water marks on any of my furniture.

I think satin or dead flat , Saman makes a awesome urethane . Its a bit pricey but very good .
