I have a stihl chainsaw with a 20'' bar and was wondering if I bought a 30'' Granberg Alaska mill could I use it with my current bar with the intention of upgrading to a better saw within the next few years? would the mill fit the smaller bar I currently have?

The Alaska mill is adjustable, so a longer mill can fit a shorter bar. When installed you will lose about 9-10" of cutting space- so a 20" bar will give an effective 10" log dia. cut. So buy the mill at least 10" longer than your anticipated future bar length. And remember- you cannot stick any bar on a power head. You need enough power to pull a longer chain.

I want to re-word that last post. It is not a 10" log per se- but rather a 10" cut, so you can get a 10" can't from the log.
