Hi Folks
I am a sawmiller from Qld,Australia
Specialising in highly figured woods
Maple,Cedar,Oak Blackwood and more
Operate a lucas mill swing blade for over 30 years now
I have sawdust flowing through my veins!
Here's a preview of what I create with the saw blade

No recent projects but there are a few in the pipeline (Bowls/Jewelry boxes)

Glad you like the Queensland Maple too
Post some Blackwood (Acacia sp.)pics today as well...it is real eye candy!

Strictly a sawyer mate
However I commission fine woodcraft from time to time
Determined to learn the art of turning going forward...so will be investing in a wood lathe soon!
A fascinating craft that really highlights the beauty of wood imo

OK...back to the Qld Maple
Here are two examples of grain orientation
One is Backsawn and the other is Quartersawn
I prefer to mill quartersawn material as it is generally more stable
Backsawn material however is generally more 'figured' and aestheticly pleasing to the eye
It is more likely to cup though during the seasoning process...a bit of a trade off!
A little more care is needed.
Incidently the board with the prominent banding is the quartersawn one.
