Hello...I'm a beginner at finishing wood and I just completed a nightstand build. I have completed the staining process and now I need to apply a protective coating. What is the best coating to achieve a satin finish and will be durable?
If the wood is light in color and you don't have the means of spraying I would use a water based polyurethane. If the wood is medium to dark in color then the wipe on poly would probably be the easiest for you. Oil based poly tends to yellow as they age and isn't suited for light colored woods. If you do have the means of spraying I would seal with a vinyl sealer and use a pre-catalyzed lacquer.
