Just an FYI for fellow turners -

I dunno if this was applies to all the Home Depots out there, but I chanced upon some poplar blanks at my local store that I thought was a good deal. 1-1/2" square x 32" long for $1.99 each. Straight grained and clear, they make good cauls and are great for turning practice. The wood turns easily.

I picked some of these up myself recently, but mine were a few dollars more. They also had some red oak in the same size. I got a few of each to practice with. And if I get lucky they may even become a tool handle.

I have bought a few of those from HD and made canes out of them...they do turn well. You can use a little dye to make the wood more attractive.
