Alright so I'm fairly new to woodworking but I do have several successful projects I've completed in my home, my current one is similar to my last, in which I made a window frame out of Red Oak.. the question arises due to a difference in the topcoat or sealer I'm using: I chose Minwax fast drying polyurethane instead of Polycrilic.. I used same stain on each which is something called: Storm System Protector stain and sealer (I used it because: 1- I've got a gal of it 2- it really looks great and gives the perfect color.
With the previous pieces I was able to apply this oil-based stain and after about 4-5days of drying then put the polycrilic on.. again, it turned out great! The directions on can of polycrilic were to wait 2hrs then lightly scratch with 220 and wipe clean and re-coat, that was exactly what I did and it was perfect..
same thing here on this new piece except after 12hrs of drying after applying the Polyurethane it's still sticky.. and the can says 4-6hrs?
I'm wondering is it possible that it just takes longer since it's oil-based? I ask cause the oil-based storm system stain and sealer says 8hrs or so to dry yet it really takes 4days!
I'm actually regretting using the polyurethane now.. I just wanted a bit stronger topcoat on this particular window frame and heard that oil-poly was the way to go, buy my lack of experience with this is causing unnerving doubts to creep up.. if it's still sticky tomorrow what should I do?
