Parts for older lathes

Other than constantly checking EBay any ideas where to locate parts for older lathes? I have a Powermatic 3520a that I need a quill and quill lead screw for. I also have a Jet 1442VS that I need the speed control handle, bracket to mount the motor and the lid that covers the wire hook ups on the motor.

These lathes are old enough that JPW no longer has these parts for them and wants me to buy new equipment. That is not an option so anyone know of a woodworking equipment wrecking yard or similar place. Can you point me in the right direction?

Unfortunately when you have equipment that parts have been discontinued you either have to find someone parting one out or have a machine shop repair or fabricate the parts. I have a bandsaw which the company probably went out of business in the 1920's and needed the upper wheel. I had to have machine shop ream out the arbor hole and put a bronze bearing in it to be able to use the saw.

I’ve had some back and forth conversations with a very nice person at JPW named Jenny who has informed me that I am basically out of luck. The tail stock parts for the 3520 B and C are available but do not fit the A. I can’t even buy a whole B or C tail stock because the bed was redesigned.

As for the 1442VS it was replaced by the 1440. Essentially the same deal. Motor mount was redesigned and the speed control was changed to a knob.

The tail stock on the 3520 is seized up with rust. I’ve got a guy working on it to see if he can free it up without causing any damage. I soaked it in oil then Evaporust and again in oil but couldn’t get the quill to move. The wheel would turn a bit so the lead screw was free. The quill lock was not engaged.

The 1442, the motor mount broke right through the screw holes. I came off smashing the box that covers the wire connections. The Motor is fine. The speed control handle was broken by two idiots who were careless when they were moving it.

most manufacturers actually use as many standard parts as they can to keep costs down. Of course they rarely will tell you the sources for such parts or whether another manufacturer also uses the same source and parts. A small engine specialist recently showed my how some Chinese engines are so well copied from Honda, that some parts are interchangeable. He put a Chinese carb on my honda engine and months later it still runs great.

The same is probably true for some of the parts you need.

You might be able to get a local makerspace to 3d print a handle and lid for these. I have a coworker that is constantly printing replacement parts for items that break. Is the speed control handle a lever you need to apply force to or an electric speed control? If there is force being applied to it, a 3d print might not work as well.

Unfortunately it was made of pot metal and it had a spring loaded lock that was actuated by the handle. My guess is that this was to keep it from being accidentally hit while in use. That is a good idea about the cover though.
There's a lot of old machinery knowledge here. And since may of them members are restoring tools, they may have good leads on parts or makers of parts.

Thanks, I will check it out.
Hello apachedawg,

I've got a 1442VS speed control handle, motor end bell with bracket
and junction box cover you can have for the cost of shipping.

If you want the entire motor, you can have it for the cost of shipping. Your call.
(the motor is in good shape. runs fine. I replaced it with a 3-phase motor/VFD)

Send me a PM so we can work out the details.

Regards,

Bill

Check with Redmond and Sons, southwest of Atlanta. Scott is the person I have worked with. Good luck. I have a 1973 Powermatic 90 lathe. Pleasant Street Machinery in DeKalb Illinois may be another source, but it is hit or miss.

Thanks I will check then out.
Pleasant Street is in a very old building, stocked full of old, big machines. I have purchased parts from them on e bay, and stopped by a couple months ago when I the area. I got a tour of the building. Antique city for sure. Not even lights in most of it. The tour was by flashlight! But nice people.
