We have some paint we want to use on our table but are unsure of what seal it with or if a sealer is even needed on an eating surface.
Any advice will be appreciated.

Just a few questions.

What kind of wood is the table?
Does it have any finish on it now?
If it does, what is it?
What kind of paint do you want to use?

Kind of tough to give an opinion without more details. Maybe a picture would help. I like pictures.

It is just a laminant(sp) table.
The paint is latex semi gloss

I don't think latex is a good choice for a table top. Tables get plenty of little dings and nicks and scrapes, and latex is notoriously easy to scuff and mar.

Oil based paints dry harder and flow together better if you are going to brush it. A flooring enamel would be even better.

I'm a novice finisher but I feel fairly confident I am not leading you wrong here. There may be even better options for you though maybe one of our resident finishers will notice the thread.

P.S. you want to scuff the top with sandpaper if it is a slick top so the paint will adhere better.
