Orange peel issue need help!! UPDATE PROBLEM RESOLVED

I am having a problem with orange peel that I have never had before. I am finishing a smalll table. Spraying SW precat high bild lacquer with a air coat air assisted airless.

The orange peel is only happening on the top of the table and NO place else??

I have tried hitting it with straight thinner and its not taking it out.

Any suggestions??

It turns out it was not a orange peel issue. It was a contamination issue on the top of the table. I ended up stripping it again and then using Zinsser dewaxed shellac sanding sealer. I will never do a refinish job without first using Zinsser!!

Adding a straight lacquer thinner would make it dry faster. You could trek down to a Sherwin-Williams store and pick up some retarder. Other causes could be...

The subject just isn't getting wet enough.

Too large of a spray pattern. Try adjusting the pattern to allow a more concentrated spray path while maintaining some overlap.

Moving the gun too fast.

Too far from the work.

Air/fluid mix isn't rich enough. Turn down the air pressure at the gun and increase the fluid control.

HVLP guns are infamous for creating a spray that's hard to see. Add more light to the area so you can see a "wet line". Try to work with a "glare".

Application has a chance to dry before the next coat.

Temperature may be too cold.

Thinner you used is too fast.

Assuming you are experienced with spraying the lacquer in summer I would guess the sprayer needed a thorough cleaning. If that isn't it perhaps you got a batch of lacquer that is thicker than normal. If that is the case you could eliminate the orange peal by using more thinner. I spray lacquer in summer and I seldom use retarder thinner. I save it for humid weather.
