It's often called a face vise because you typically mount it on the front of your bench. Most face vises mount under the bench but it looks like your vise will have to be screwed onto the front face of your bench. I assume your $3 vise has wood on the inside of the plates as to not dent the wood. These vises are not designed to hold a piece of wood which will be subject to a lot of torque. They mostly hold boards so you can work on the edges with a support for the other end of the board.
