Hi everyone,

I'm looking at the plans for a rolling storage cart in the Wood magazine 101+ Best Ever Workshop Projects publication and they are saying to put a 1/8" round-over on the cleats. My question is (just so I am understanding them correctly), does this mean to slightly round the edge of the cleat? in other words, as you look at the end of one of the cleats, you would see one corner/edge that has a rounded appearance vs. having all four edges square?

Thats what it kind of looks like in the pictures but they don't give a close enough view so I can't properly tell.

There are likely more than a couple reasons for doing this, I can think of at least two... one for aesthetic and one for function...

Giving the edge a round over gives the piece a bit more of a softer more finished look. It is easier on the hands when touched

When you put a finish on a piece, if the edges are squared up still, the finish will break at the corner so it will be much thinner right at an area that would likely get more abuse anyway.

I just learned something new! I didn't know about the whole thinner area stuff. Makes sense though.

Wood4Fun you are correct, they were saying that the rounded edge was to help allow the storage containers to slide easier in their respected bins.

If you don't have that roundover capability yet, you can easily just chamfer the edge with a variety of tools...block plane, TS, jointer, and even a sander can knock and edge off if need be. The end result is accomplishes much the same thing.
