I just purchased a small live edge slab of pine. It's about 6 wide by 30 long with a thickness of 2 inches. I am completely new to working with slabs and was wondering if anyone could suggest any good books or websites on working with and treating slabs.

Is it 6" x 30" or 6' x 30'?
Lots of guys here, that do that type of work.
What's your questions?

It is all in inches.

I am still debating whether or not I want to make this into a nice side table/night stand or a shelf.

I guess my questions for this slab are as follows:

How do I treat the bark? Do I need to remove it or can it stay? If I need to remove it what are some techniques and tricks that one uses.

There is a few surface scratches and dings on the topside I would like to use so I'll be sanding those out. But what about finishing?

I've only ever stained wood, I'm not familiar with polyurethane or other types of sealers.

I'd ideally like to keep with a clear coat and let the natural color do the wood shine.

Thanks
