New safety dado set allowed in EU

TMK the reason dado stacks were banned in Europe is a law was passed mandating table saw blades have to stop within 10 seconds of being turned off. The reason the dado stack was banned is because the saws could not stop within the 10 seconds due to the weight. And, they decided that IF a saw is designed able to stop the dado stack fast enough, the arbor nut could come lose due to the rapid deceleration. This would case the chippers to move inside the stack. And along comes CMT and the locking dado stack.

I'm not an engineer but I'm questioning the theory and concluding it's a reaction to a very small number of accidents blamed on improperly tightened arbor nuts. The only way that's going to happen is if the nut isn't tightened properly. Katz Moses shows chippers moving after a brake activation. I don't know if that would actually happen with an arbor nut tightened properly.

If you watch the video below that is an exampel of a SawStop brake activation and no movement of chippers. RE the Katz Moses video, I suspect the example of moving chippers was deliberately rigged. And even if true, the blade is drawn under the table.

Fast forward to 14:00

I agree with @Tool Agnostic this is not a blade designed for SawStop. It's a blade designed to me the EU standard. Katz Moses is trying to sell the dado set to SawStop owners, and I'll bet many will buy it.

The Saw Stop uses a different brake for the dado set if I recall?
This brake should grab the entire stack and stop it from rotating, so it won't matter what the arbor nut does.
True. And it does as shown in the video, or SawStop would not have made a dado break. I think that’s common and legal sense.

Katz Moses is a good ww’er Im sure but he’s a marketer and salesman. Good bet he’s either getting paid by CMT or receiving free product. Same thing with his Cubitron test. Ran right out and bought a pack, not very impressed. Bought his stop block, solid, but issues. Not a big KM fan anymore.

He’s not the only one hiding thats he’s being compensated. As you know, many “reviews” are outright advertisements.

The SawStop brakes cover only a fraction of a full circle arc. If you are using a dado stack with two-wing chippers, there is a good chance the brake will miss one of the chipper wings when it triggers. The chipper will either stop from friction within the pack, or it will continue to rotate forward until it collides with other teeth or the brake itself. The Katz-Moses video showed the latter, but we do not know if that is typical.
I think maybe we focus on the brake and forget the blade drop is part of the system. Regardless, while I agree a chipper could still move IF the arbor nut was not tightened like it should be, but if installed properly I just can't see it as an issue. Sure I could be wrong, but my reasoning is also based on if this was a real "thing", SS would not have given the dado option from day one. Lighter weight winged cutters and no shoulders are specified and make sense.

I guess I trust SS to have throughly researched this and we should stop second guessing. They would have huge, huge legal exposure if the phenomenon really occured.

And let's remember the locking dado set was made for the EU Standard, not a SawStop. IMO putting it on a SawStop JKM is misleading people and creating doubt about what they have. Maybe SawStop will come out with a position on it.

No, I won't be rushing out to by a locking dado set!!
