Hey guys, I'm building a couple of these bookshelves for a customer and I'm curious to know how you would go about making the square pieces on what I guess you could call a corbel near the top of the bookshelves. I have tried to carve them and I'm just not getting the result that I want. Btw, I don't claim to be a master carver either. Lol! Any help would be appreciated and I know the picture isn't all that great but it's the one the customer had sent me. Thanks!!!!

I think what you are referring to are called "rosettes". You can do them with a cutter used in a drill press.

The top of this particular corbel has a rosette, but if you want a complete corbel, they are tricky to make.
If the customer is willing to spend the money, you can order them in several styles, some very similar to the picture.

Thanks for the replies but I know what rosettes are. Lol! I guess you can call them rosettes still. But, these look like they taper in four directions like a diamond. I know its kinda hard to tell in the pic.

OK I see

I enlarged the image to see it better and you're right they are inclined facets like a smashed pyramid. Can't figure out how to post it though... I'm thinking had carving. :blink:

It kinda looks like it has a slight curve to it too. I'll give another go at trying to carve it. I just wasn't getting the look I wanted so I thought I would get some other opinions. Thanks a lot!!!

Go ahead and carve close to the finished design and then hone in on the design and smooth it out with a Dremel or other rotary tool - even a cone sander. Good luck...

If they are pyramid shaped in side , Why not make them in two pieces. Router or chisel out the square then make the pyramid pice separate and glue it in after. Should still look like all one pice with the relief on the sides.

I'll explain so even you can understand.
There were 3 links. Why 3? Because I didn't find the exact solution in any of them. If I had, I would have posted it. Why post them at all? Because it's about the concept ...No Hand Carving Required as the OP was reluctant or unable to do that. He may chose another applique or onlay that will suit the requirements...I donno :blink:
I am not going to look through ALL the pages of onlays on ALL the links to find the exact one for you or for anyone else at 5:30 in the AM. If this helps the OP fine, that's who the intended recipient of the information is for, not you. If you want to look through them ALL, go for it.

Some reason to get nasty? I just asked a question. My 5 yr old grandaughter knows about "Google". My best guess is that adults using computers know about it. I would think something specific could be derived from members like yourself that has done searches, but, you could say "any help" would be a help.

lol dont feel bad cal i've started fights on here before too, to answer your original post in a drama free way if you wanna try to carve them yourself more more power to ya but I know jack about carving, our shop always orders those types of accents, you might luck up and find one with dental mold at the top but the best way would be to order a corbel like the one pictured and then miter the dental around it, i'm not sure what company we order from but if you cant find what you're looking for I'll ask for ya. thats a sweet looking piece hope to see final pics!

Hey guys, thanks for trying to help. I really appreciate it. But, this is a situation where it needs to be made from the same wood I am using being that I'm building this from some Walnut that my customer's husband cut down and milled before he passed away. So,needless to say it has some real sentimental value to it. I'll get it looking right eventually.... Thanks again!!!
