I use the same approach Dave recommended (except I have the 2" version from Woodcraft).

I'd do this with the lathe powered off -- and maybe even lock the headstock to stop it turning as the spinning of the sandpaper on the drill attempts to rotate it.

I find a stiff back-plate works best for removing tool grooves, the soft sponge pads follow the shape (so I ended up with beautifully polished tool marks, as opposed to removing them :laughing:)

When the surface is just about flat, I add the soft sponge pad between the sandpaper and the disk/mandrel.
